Welcome to Mrs. Blaney’s Creative Writing Class
Course Overview: Welcome to Creative Writing. This is an academic elective where you will create various written pieces, which will in turn improve your skills as writers. This course is designed to give you the tools you need to become better writers. Within this course you will be expected to not only evaluate your own written work, but to provide thoughtful reflections on the work of your peers. This criticism will be given in a small workshop setting. While participating in this course, you will also be active participants in the school newspaper The Woodstonian. The course objectives are listed below:
Students will be able to
· utilize constructive criticism to better their writing through the usage of productive reflection practices.
· comprehend how to write a feature article for a newspaper.· recognize the ethics of good writing.
· break down various genres of literature from a writer’s standpoint.
· analyze good writing and reflect on what makes a writer good at his or her craft.
Topics Covered Within This Course:
-History and ethics of journalism
-Legalities of being a writer
-Making an interview work
-Proper quotation methods/feature article writing
-Creative non-fiction
-Creative Fiction/ flash fiction
-Screenwriting
-Children’s Fiction
-Characterization, setting, and plot
Course Materials:
- 3 Ring Binder 1 ½ or 2 inches – Binder should be stacked with lined paper at all times- Small Writer’s Journal
- Blue and Black Pens
- Reflection Folder- This folder will hold all of your reflections for each semester
- Flash drive

Late Policy:
All assignments are expected to be completed on time. If an assignment is not completed on time, the students will recieve an academic detention. After five days, the assignment becomes a zero if it is not completed. It is important to meet all deadlines within this course especially while writing for the newspaper. It is also important to meet deadlines during workshop days.
Classroom Rules:
1. Be respectful of instructor and peers at all times .
2. Be on time.
3. Follow all school rules in student handbook.
