    Grade 5 - MSS Room 103

                               2017 - 2018

Welcome parents, students, and friends to Mrs. Mullison's homepage, and to Mary S. Shoemaker School! I look forward to all of the learning experiences we will share this year.  Fifth grade will be a wonderful adventure for all of us!

This is my seventeenth year teaching fifth grade in the Woodstown-Pilesgrove School District and my fifth year at MSS!  I teach Language ArtsMath, Science, and Social Studies.  In each area, we will be completing many hands-on, interesting activities.

    Reading
In Language Arts, we will be completing a variety of reading and writing activities.  We will be reading several novels throughout the course of the year, as well as working in small reading groups.  During this time, we will focus on reading strategies that will help the children enhance their reading fluency, while developing an appreciation for reading and fostering habits of lifelong readers.  Students will also have the opportunity to read and write independently each day. They will be given time to read books of their choice during the school day, and required to read at home each evening. They will also need to complete a weekly reading log.
    Math

This year in Math, we will instruct under the Common Core math standards.  We will cover the following units: Operations and Algebraic Thinking, Number & Operations in Base Ten, Number & Operations - Fractions,  Measurement & Data and Geometry.

Students can log onto their Pearson accounts for homework and additional practice.

For extra support, practice or a challenge, please have your child log on to his or her IXL account.

    Science

Science is a favorite subject of many students. The fifth grade science curriculum will continue to keep students not only interested, but excited about science! We will begin the year by working on the kit Ecosystems. Students will learn about biomes and the basic needs of life. We will analyze the way in which the environment is affected by the living things within it, focusing on pollution. We will also construct ecocolumns where students will observe the environmental interactions of plants and animals.

     History

In Social Studies, we will be studying American history from the earliest migratory groups to Westward Expansion.
