Grade 5 - MSS Room 103
2021 - 2022
Welcome parents, students, and friends to Ms. Mullison's homepage, and to Mary S. Shoemaker School! I look forward to all of the learning experiences we will share this year. Fifth grade will be a wonderful adventure for all of us!This is my twenty-first year teaching fifth grade in the Woodstown-Pilesgrove School District and my sixteenth year as the fifth grade team leader. I teach Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies. In each area, we will be completing many hands-on, interesting activities.
In Language Arts, we will be completing a variety of reading and writing activities. We will be reading several novels throughout the course of the year, as well as working in small reading groups. During this time, we will focus on reading strategies that will help the children enhance their reading fluency, while developing an appreciation for reading and fostering habits of lifelong readers. Students will also have the opportunity to read and write independently each day. They will be given time to read books of their choice during the school day, and required to read at home each evening. They will also need to complete a weekly reading log. This year in Math, we will instruct under the New Jersey Student Learning Standards for math. We will cover the following units: Operations and Algebraic Thinking, Number & Operations in Base Ten, Number & Operations - Fractions, Measurement & Data and Geometry.Students can log onto their Pearson accounts for homework and additional practice.
Science is a favorite subject of many students. The fifth grade science curriculum will continue to keep students not only interested, but excited about science! We will begin the year by working on the kit Ecosystems. Students will learn about the basic needs of life and the interdependent relationships among living things. We will analyze the way in which the environment is affected by the living things within it, focusing on pollution. We will also construct ecocolumns where students will observe the environmental interactions of plants and animals.
In Social Studies, we will be studying American history starting with early migratory groups and learning about the three homelands that make up our country today. We will learn about life in the colonies, the Revolutionary Era and the creation of the Constitution. Students will also dabble with United States geography.
